Podcasting, the new audio distribution technology that sparked a boom in the United States, is now causing a stir in Japan too. Put simply, by registering with websites that provide MP3s and other audio data, podcasting enables users to download files automatically and listen to them on their iPod or other audio player.
Although audio distribution has been possible for some time via online radio, streaming has always made it impossible to download and listen to audio clips, let alone carry them around with you.
Podcasting offers a whole host of new ways to enjoy audio, enabling users to listen to clips in much the same way that they would automatically download and read the latest news using an RSS reader. Using features such as these, even companies that had previously struggled to get their message across can now convey a wealth of information to users and express themselves clearly.
What are Podcasts?
The name “podcast” refers to audio clips or programs that can be broadcast (distributed) in the form of audio data files and saved to iPods or other portable audio players for users to listen to.
Podcasting is a means of making audio data available via the internet. Podcasts are essentially audio blogs and are even referred to by some as blogcasts. As audio data can now be distributed via RSS, providing that users have an aggregator (data gathering software) such as iTunes or iPodder, they can obtain updated audio clips automatically without actually accessing the host website. What is more, as users can listen to downloaded clips on their iPod or other portable music player, podcasting offers the major advantage of enabling users to enjoy contents regardless of what time it is (time shift) and where they are (location free)

Already a large number of online radio shows broadcast using podcasting technology. Podcasting is now also possible on major blog sites, enabling users to attach audio files to their standard blogs.
Cases of podcasting being used by companies for business purposes are also on the increase, such as IBM's podcast service for investors. Possible benefits that podcasting could offer companies in terms of distributing information include the following.
